What’s up with solar lawn lights?

January 25th, 2012, 11:18 am · 4 Comments · posted by

I’ve tried twice now to install a few solar-powered stake lights in a dark area of my front yard.

The first time, a few years ago, I asked for and received a set of lights for Christmas. I finally got around to installing them in February.

They didn’t work. None of them.

I decided to give it another shot recently. I bought one and it seemed to work, so I bought three more. Then the first one stopped working.

I bought one to replace it.

Now they all work but only intermittently. Last night, the two middle ones were on. The night before, three out of the four.

Is this normal? I see other solar lights around the neighborhood that seem to be more reliable.

Before you ask, yes, I follow the instructions for installation.

I’m just curious what others’ experience with them might be.

Those lights charge a battery during the day to run the light at night. Sounds like the batteries or either faulty or not getting a full charge. It has been cloudy and the batteries would have started at zero charge so it could just be they need a full charge before working properly.

Yes, they charge up a battery, but yours are new so maybe that’s not the trouble. They need full on sun and I keep mine away from the sprinklers. If you need a new battery, mine use the expensive type battery. Those skinny little ones.

China thanks you for your purchase! The virus is now seeping into your house through the base of your new solar powered “lights”…

The lights powered by solar energy usually work better during clear days and less so on cloudy days . The more expensive ones work much better than el cheapos. My experience. I paid about $8 a piece for mine and they a re better than the 3 dollar ones by along shot. Donno AKA Dbrasco
